Question: I want to be a doctor when I grow up, do you think working at a VET would be a good place to do work experience?

  1. Hi andipandi,
That’s a great ambition and cool that you already know that’s what you want to do!

Animals get lots of diseases that are exactly like what humans get, like cancer, diabetes, kidney failure and even dementia. Also, the types of diagnostic tools and treatment options available for pets these days is very like a human hospital. Some vet clinics have blood pathology machines, super high tech surgical equipment for doing things like cataract surgery and even CT scanners!

A vet clinic is a great place to do work experience if you are interested in medicine because of the variety of stuff you will see. In a normal day a vet will see consultations, do vaccinations, take x-rays, do a few operations, take blood, do some dentistry and… *phew* i’m tired just thinking about it! Because doctors are so specialised, it would be hard to find work experience at a doctor’s clinic that covers all these things.

But… obviously there are also lots of things that are different, and so I would also recommend that you talk to as many different doctors as you can, and maybe see if you can get some work experience in a general practice or maybe work as a medical receptionist on the weekends if you can.

Good luck with your future as a doctor!
