Question: do you think students should have homework

Keywords: , ,

  1. Hi moonta,

I remember having to do homework that I just hated doing, either because it was too easy, too hard, or too boring.

I do think, however, that students should have to do some homework that is worth doing — and the homework that, looking back now, I think was ‘worth doing’ is not always the same as what I thought when I was at school.

  2. Hi moonta,

For me, the best ideas and understanding comes when I am alone – reading or drawing, or looking at some experiment results. This, for me was the purpose of homework – to get that set time when you have to sit and do stuff at home.

Sure, I’d much prefer to be at the beach or hanging out with my friends most of the time but I can see its value.

Also, as a scientist, there are many days when I have to take work home with me because there is just not enough time to get it all done during the day. So, if I had never done homework during school I would find that aspect of the job really hard. I dont think that is just for scientists either – doctors, finance people, economists, performers etc all have to do work from home at times.

  3. Hi Moonta,
That’s a good question – and I really think it depends a lot on what the homework is, and it’s hard when you’re sitting there doing the work when you’d rather be watching TV or going to the beach. I do think that it can be really helpful when learning new things to go over those things at home, because it does help you to learn them better. I don’t think there are many people who can just listen to an idea once and expect to fully understand it or remember it later on! So, homework that helps you to learn and remember things can be really beneficial (although it might not always feel like it at the time!).
Like Kate, I also have to take work home quite a bit, so I guess that’s really the same as homework, and I think that most jobs have some element of homework.
    Hope that make sense 🙂
