E. coli is bacteria. Actually its a tiny rod-shaped bacteria and its long name is Escherichia coli.
It lives with many many other types of bacteria in your guts (yes!) and its generally harmless. There are more than 50 types of E. coli and only a few of them are dangerous. These are not the ones that live in your guts – and when they get there, you get poisoning and a VERY unhappy intestine. 😉
