Question: do you think it is possible to bring dinos back from the dead?

Keywords: ,

  1. Nah – not the classic ones like T-rex and triceratops types. Scientists can’t yet build a whole creature just from Fossils, drawings or DNA 🙁

But… there are some pretty ancient reptiles still wandering around the earth today – some of which would fit right in to the dino era! Like the giant Komodo Dragon – check out the photos on this page: http://www.heptune.com/komodo.html despite their size, apparently they can run as fast as a dog – scary!

And even if they could be brought back from the dead, nobody would want to try it because they would destroy the whole ecosystem that exists today.

  2. I think Kate’s got it pretty much covered. But the fact that it’s impossible today doesn’t mean that it’ll remain impossible tomorrow.

Biologists have “built” a bacterium — OK, so that’s a really simple life form and nothing like a dinosaur — from its DNA, having first designed the DNA itself! This was in May 2010. They cheated only a little bit…

  3. Hi stiffyxxoo,

This is a classic question – I was a huge fan of Jurassic Park when it first came out, and at the time I was kinda hoping that it would be possible to bring dinosaurs back (not that it ended up being a really good idea in Jurassic Park or any of the sequels!). However, as Kate and Edward said – humans are a long way from being able to genetically engineer dinosaurs.

This is probably a good thing – since the world the dinosaurs knew and the world that exists today are very different – with different plant life, different landscape and different climate, and they are really not likely to be compatible with humans…

So, Jurassic Park is certainly an interesting idea, and it might be possible with new scientific advances to bring them back from the dead – but not for a long time!
