Question: How and why does a rainbow form?

Keywords:

  1. Hi leelee1997,

The reason at the bottom of it is that light of different frequencies (which we see as different colours) is bent slightly differently when it moves between air and water.

Since I can’t draw diagrams here, I think the best thing is for you to have a look at an answer that DOES include diagrams:

  2. Hi leelee1997.

Light is made up of lots of different colours – but normally they are mixed all together, so it looks white – like normal light.

BUT, that white light gets bent when it shines through water droplets when it rains. Because each of the colours that make up the white light bend a slightly different amount, the colours separate so you can see them all – a rainbow!
