Question: Do you believe inserting proteins and/or other substances into bacteria is ethical for human gain?

  1. Hi jayden

I think that when you need to find out what a gene or protein does in the body, then inserting it into bacteria is much safer than inserting it into human cells.

In the lab, we grow bacteria all the time to use for these types of experiments. This is because we can control exactly how the bacteria grow, and they are really easy to grow in large amounts. These bacteria are harmless and are never released into the environment anyway – they are kept in containers within the laboratory.

If we were to put strange proteins into bacteria that exist in the environment then it might be quite dangerous as we don’t know if that protein would make it into a ‘super bug’. This is why there are strict rules that control what we can and can not alter in the lab. 🙂
