Question: what happens when you pull a hamstring

    OUCHY. Muscles are pretty cool things really – so strong but so flexible at the same time!

    Muscles are made of lots of bundles of muscles cells and these bundles are wrapped up into more bundles and then that is covered in a fibrous sheath and attached via a tendon to the bones – check out this picture:

    When you tear a hamstring, some of those muscle cells tear away from eachother. A minor hamstring tear affects just a few cells. This hurts, but recovers quickly. Sometimes, you can tear a larger bundle of muscle fibres and this REALLY hurts and takes AGES to heal, withe no exercise. Then in the worst cases, the muscle actually tears off the bone and needs to be re-attached by doctors at surgery – OOOOUCH.
