Question: how long have you been a scientist for?

Keywords: , , , ,

  1. Hi Rachel, depends when you count from… – it doesn’t matter how old you are or what qualifications you have, anyone can do science!

So, in a way I have always been a scientist – always asking questions and exploring my environment. I remember pulling apart plants and flowers to try to work out how they grow, and trying to bake with my own recipes (note to self… mixing ingredients in random ways does not make a cake rise… epic failures)

But, in particular I’ve been looking at cells, DNA and epigenetics now for about seven years. (time flies when you’re having fun ;))

  2. Hi Rachel,

As Kate said, it depends what you mean by ‘scientist’.

If you mean how long I have done “research” to discover things that nobody knew before, then I was a scientist for about four years.

But LEARNING science can be a life-long thing for everybody!

  3. Hi Rachel,

Kate and Edward are spot on. You’re never too young to be a scientist – it’s all about understanding why the world works the way it does.

Most scientists start to specialise only after they finish their undergraduate degree at University.

  4. Hi Racel,
I agree with the rest of the guys – I was probably a ‘scientist’ long before I became a scientist as a full-time job. But, if you want to know how long I’ve actually worked in science -it’s almost 10 years (including my PhD),
Wow – that has gone FAST!
