Question: What type of equipment do you use as a hydrologist?

  1. Hi anipandi,

Most of our work involves running computer models to see if we can predict what happens in the real world. However, we also measure streamflow in rivers using a whole range of different techniques. In my profile there’s a photo of one (that didn’t work particularly well).

We measure depth of water, velocity of the water, turbidity (dirtiness) of the water, and we collect samples from the rivers to bring back to the laboratory and analyse them for things like phosphorous (which can cause algal blooms), nitrogen, pesticides, heavy metals etc. Being in the field can be good fun. in general, these measurements are taken by people called hydrographers (as opposed to hydrologists). they tend to work for State Water Services and supply their data to us, although sometimes we collect it ourselves.
