Hi cnixon,
Almost definitely. Probably not on the planets in our solar system, but there are so many other planets that it is likely that some of them will have life on them. Astronomers are looking, right now, for planets that would be suitable for life (most of them are either too hot, too cold, or have nasty atmospheres).
We already know of 562 planets outside the solar system — and we only started finding these planets in 1995. We also know that we will never find most other planets, because they are just too far away. When you remember that we are only finding planets that are nearby in OUR galaxy, and that the universe contains more than 100 billion galaxies, there must be soooo many planets out there that I think there just must be life SOMEWHERE!

Hi cnixon,
That’s cool Edward – I did not know that we know of 562 planets outside the solar system!
cnixon the reason there is life on earth is because it is exactly the right distance from a big warm star – the sun, so that the water on Earth stays as water and does not evaporate because it is too hot or freeze because it is too cold. Of all the other planets out there, there MUST be at least one that just happens to be the right distance from a sun to be ok for life.
Also, that’s just the requirements for life like we know it. Perhaps there are other types of life, that dont need water? so the distance from a sun would not be so critical. Its pretty exciting to think that we’ve only been finding new planets since 1995 and there’s already 562. Imagine what we might find in our lifetime(s)!
