Parts of the sun explode all the time – did you see the pictures in the paper the other day – the biggest “solar flare’ for many years!
And these – http://www.bit.ly/iCsV9J are some of the most beautiful pictures of the sun (SEE – science can be beautiful!)
I don’t think the whole think will explode, but given enough time (billions of years) it might run out of energy and shrivel out.
Who knows – by then we might have found ways to catch sunlight from distant galaxies, and may even have ways to transport ourselves to other planets to live too!
When the Sun beings to run out of its fuel (hydrogen) in about 5 billion years, it will expand (but not explode) into a red giant (http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_giant).

Hi nickskii,
When the Sun beings to run out of its fuel (hydrogen) in about 5 billion years, it will expand (but not explode) into a red giant (http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_giant).
It will not explode in a supernova (http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supernova), but Earth will be destroyed anyway by the red-giant Sun. 🙁
