Stomach fluid can be pretty acidic – it is comprised mainly of HCl (hydrochloric acid) and when it is secreted from the cells in the stomach it has a pH of 1-2 (pretty low down on the pH scale!)
This helps digestion of proteins start. The stomach has a lining of mucous though to protect it from this caid and then when the food goes into the duodenum, or small intestine, other cells produce a basic solution to balance out the acid from the stomach.

Hope that helps!
