Bugs (especially cockroaches freak me out a little bit) but I actually quite like spiders! Both bugs and spiders have an important role to play in the ecosystem and in our gardens.
Bugs for example like lady beetles (I do like those types of bugs) help to pollinate plants as they carry pollen from one flower to another. Then spiders do their best to keep the bugs and flies under control by trapping them in their web.
There are also these cool beetles that ball-up cattle poo to help it decompose quicker and these are really important beetles. They are aptly named “dung beetles” ๐
I hate spiders and most insects and have also often said to myself, ‘what are these things FOR?!’
Kate has explained some of the things that insects do, but asking about the PURPOSE of spiders and other insects, and saying they “are there to help pollinate plants” (which is not quite what Kate said) leads on to the question of what those plants are FOR, and then to what all animals — including people — are FOR. And that’s a different ballgame.

This hasn’t stopped some scientists asking if it would be bad for the rest of the ecosystem if we killed off all mosquitoes: ๐ http://www.nature.com/news/2010/100721/full/466432a.html
