Question: What role does the amygdala play in people who suffer from anxiety?

  1. Hi salbal01,

That’s an intriguing question! I remember learning about the amygdala at Uni and that it is an almond shaped part of the brain that sits really deep. It belongs to part of the brain called the limbic system and this system is involved in mood, aggression and emotions.

Did you know that if males are castrated, the amygdala shrinks? what’s that they say about where the male brain is?… Just joking. Anyway… I digress.

Is it related to anxiety? good question. I guess it would make sense, given it is linked to mood and fear response. I am not sure of what research is being done to sort out how to help people in this region but it sure seems like a grand place to start looking for answers!
