Question: Do u get to blow stuff up?

Keywords: ,

  1. Not me, no 🙁

(although occasionally when I’m cooking… but that’s usually an accident…)

But… I do get to turn cells green and make them glow under the microscope! That’s pretty cool 🙂

  2. No, I don’t get to blow stuff up either.

But I know people who do, like people who work in the mining industry. One of my friends always gets caught by that explosives detector at the airport because he always has TNT dust on him. He has to explain what he does for a living. I think he tries not to fly very much!

  3. Sometimes………but the stuff is food and more of a burn than blowup!!
to measure the amount of energy (calories or kJ) are in a food we use something called a Bomb Calorimeter.
Basically we put a small amount of food into a container (the bomb) place it in water, add oxygen and light it up!!
we measure how much energy was produced by the explosion!
    😀

  4. No, I don’t get to blow stuff up – I did have a friend who did a research project in a lab where they were making and testing new explosives, and that was pretty much all she did for a year – so there are certainly scientists who do that for a living!

  5. I have also never had the chance to blow something up myself, but astronomers study the biggest explosions in the universe: supernovae, which are dying stars that explode.

You can find a short description on the NASA website here: http://heasarc.nasa.gov/docs/snr.html

and lots of pretty pictures (some real, some artistic interpretations) by Googling for ‘supernova’: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&lr=&q=supernova&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1073&bih=1015&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi
