A bit like a sail on an old-fashioned ship, except that air/wind pushes upward into a parachute instead of sideways into a sail.

Parachutes are pretty fun! Basically they rely on friction from the particles in the air. The fabric of the parachute traps all the tiny particles, that are in the air and that friction slows you down as you fall.
