I wish I knew! I think its partly genetics – some people are just born with nice vocal chords. But… even these people have to practise so it is partly that – training and hard work.
If you find out… maybe I can re-ignite my dreams as a rock star… 😉
I think Kate’s right – there is a lot of genetics involved in determining who is going to be a good singer (or dancer, or piano player). But very few people who are professional singers or musicians get there without a lot of hard work too. There are certainly things you can do to train your vocal chords and improve your singing voice. I don’t really know exactly what they do, but I guess singing lessons are the best place to start if you’re serious about singing. I can’t really give any advice on the actual exercises that you need to do (I’m a terrible singer!)
My French and Mandarin teachers used to make us learn vocabulary by doing ‘Look, cover, write, check’.
For singing, I think the equivalent would be ‘Sing, record, listen.’ So you need to take a waterproof MP3 recorder with you into the shower, listen to the result afterwards, and then try to improve on what you hear. ;-p
But, seriously, isn’t it amazing that practice can make both your mind and body better at singing — or handwriting, or playing a sport?
