Question: what happens when you break a bone?

  1. Hi karissakendall,

Well, the person screams. Alot. And to the actual bone… not good news! The bone is made up of the hard white stuff you know well, and a hollow core that is made of bone marrow – the engine room where new blood cells are made, immune cells and proteins. The outside of the bone is covered in a very thin layer of fibrous stuff and this is called the periosteum. This bit apparently is the bit that causes the most pain when a bone breaks.

There are aso lots of blood vessels, ligaments, nerves and muscles that lie close to the bones too that all get damaged when the bone breaks. Basically, when the bone is put under too much pressure in any one direction the bone cells and matrix that holds the bone cells together snaps and breaks apart. OUCH.
