Question: what is the deepest that humans have gone down into the ocean

Keywords: , , ,

  1. People have been to the deepest point in the ocean, the bottom of the Mariana Trench (between Japan and Papua New Guinea), which is 11km deep. (For comparison, Mount Everest is less than 9km high.)

The special submarine Trieste reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench in 1960 — I don’t know if anybody has been back since. (Anyone else know?)

  2. Hi unicornahonatron

I don’t know of anyone going to the bottom of the ocean since the submarine went in 1960. I also wonder if the underwater landscape changes substantially with earthquakes etc? maybe there’s a new ‘deepest spot’ that we have not been to yet!?

I can imagine that the sea life that survives at that depth would have to be pretty amazing.
