Question: Why can't dogs eat chocolate? Also, they make special chocolate dogs CAN eat, what's the difference?

  1. Hi andipandi,

One of the ingredients in chocolate is called ‘threobromine’. This is the stuff that dogs are really sensitive to. If they eat too much they start shaking and can have fits. “Dog chocolate” is carob based, so does not contain threobromine. It tastes like chocolate but it’s safe for dogs! Yay.

  1. Hmmm, okay interesting. Is there a price difference? Would the carob based chocolate be more expensive?

  3. andipandi I’m not sure about the costs of each but I think dog chocolate is probably a little cheaper. That’s probably more to do with how many regulations, processing and marketing costs there are for dog food compared with people food.
