There are mouldy ‘spores’ everywhere in the environment. You cant see them because they are so small but when they land on something like a piece of moist bread, they go crazy. Bread is moist, soft and is a perfect place for mould to grow. It just takes some time for this to happen – which is why it only happens to older bread.
