Question: Is fish really better than meat?

Keywords: , , ,

  1. bdd13, Hi! i think we touched on this in the live chat sessions. I’m not sure fish is ‘better’ than red meat. It is certainly higher in omega 3 oils, which are really good for your hair, skin etc – much higher in these oils than red meat.

    But

Red meat is MUCH higher in iron, another important part of the diet. So, I think both are good for you – as always in moderation 😉

  2. Agree with Kate’s answer, and it depends on what you mean by “better”. If you are lacking in iron, then you probably would benefit from some red meat in your diet (or iron supplements). I don’t eat red meat, so I take iron tablets instead to make sure I keep my iron levels up. But if you are watching your weight, red meat can be high in saturated fats, so you should choose lean cuts and not eat too much. It also depends what type of red meat you are eating – Kangaroo is very low in fat, so is a better choice if you are trying to reduce your fat intake.

Fish has low levels of fat, and most of that fat is in the form of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. It’s important to get enough of these fats because they are a major component of the brain (so fish really is good for your brain :-)) and also have anti-inflammatory effects. In Australia, most of us don’t eat enough fish. You do get a little bit of these omega-3 oils in eggs and red meat, and a lot of companies are now adding omega-3 oils to breads, dairy products and eggs to help improve our omega-3 fatty acid intake.

  3. Hi bdd13,

    1. As Kate and Bev have said, it’s best to eat a “balanced died” (a bit of everything).

    2. But vegetarians survive — and many of them are healthier than omnivores (the rest of us who eat meat as well as vegetables) because they choose what they eat very carefully.

    3. Those healthy omega 3s, by the way, don’t originally come from fish: they come from algae (seaweeds). The fish eat the algae, and then you eat the fish, so you get the omega 3. You could also get omega 3s by eating seaweed, but you’d have to eat a lot more than of fish, because the fish concentrate the omegas for you.
