We commonly think of food poisoning being caused by meat but unfortunately ANY foods can get nasty bacteria in them and cause food poisoning – it’s just not that common.
The nasty bacteria like salmonella that commonly cause food poisoning are most likely found in raw meat, unpasteurised eggs and dirty water supplies. If the apple comes into contact with these things, then you can become infected when you eat it.
The best thing to do to avoid this type of food poisoning is to prepare meat away from vegetables and fruit and to wash your hands (and your fruit) before you eat it. 🙂
Happy Apple eating.
You can get food poisoning from pretty much anything, if it gets into contact with the wrong bacteria – remember a few years ago when there was an outbreak of salmonella that was traced back to contaminated orange juice!
A lot of the bacteria that cause food poisoning are actually found in soil, so if vegies are fruit aren’t washed properly after they are harvested, then some bacteria can stay on then. Bacteria are also very good at jumping from one thing (e.g. raw meat) to another (e.g. a chopping board, kitchen bench or our hands), which is why its best to keep raw meat seperate from other foods and prepare it on different surfaces.
Rather worrying answer from Bev, isn’t it? (‘You can get food poisoning from pretty much anything.’)
I think it’s worth remembering that ‘food poisoning’ is a bad name: you’re basically getting an illness/disease from bacteria (Kate/Bev – are fungi viruses in the picture at all?), which is different to “normal poisoning” (if I can call it that) where a CHEMICAL, not a living thing, damages your body in some way.
Hello stigma96,
Yes – just ask Snow White! 😉
